The Best Cafes in Rio
Solo cafe in Rio de Janeiro
If you’re planning solo travel to Brazil, you can’t skip Rio de Janeiro. From golden beaches to vibrant neighborhoods, Rio is one of the most exciting destinations for solo woman travelers looking for culture, adventure, and connection. But one of my favorite — and most underrated — solo woman travel activities in Brazil is café hopping.
As a frequent solo traveler in South America, I’ve learned that discovering local cafés is one of the safest, most empowering, and most fulfilling ways to experience a new city alone. If you’re researching solo woman travel in Rio de Janeiro, here’s why cafés should absolutely be part of your itinerary — plus my favorite spots in the city.
Why Cafés Are Perfect for Solo Woman Travel in Brazil
When traveling alone as a woman, finding safe, welcoming environments matters. Cafés in Rio de Janeiro provide:
A comfortable and public setting
Time to journal and reflect
A safe place to use WiFi and plan your trip
Opportunities to meet other travelers
A low-cost solo travel activity
For women traveling alone in Brazil, cafés create intentional pauses in your day. Whether you’re solo backpacking Brazil, working remotely as a digital nomad, or following a solo woman travel itinerary, sitting down for specialty Brazilian coffee helps you slow down and feel grounded.
Café culture in Rio is social but relaxed. You’ll see locals chatting, remote workers on laptops, and travelers mapping out their next adventure. As a solo female traveler in Brazil, these are the types of spaces where you can feel independent without feeling isolated.
My Favorite Cafés in Rio de Janeiro for Solo woman Travelers
If you’re searching for the best cafés in Rio de Janeiro for solo woman travelers, these are my top picks:
SO_Lo Café
A very popular café perfect for the most stylish people watching. The Brazilian style interior design is absolutely stunning with a modern & funky twist. A great way to experience what makes Brazilian interior design styles so special. They also have a pretty substantial menu & its a perfect spot if you want to do a full brunch. Just be prepared to wait in line, because they are always packed.
Amazônia Soul
A unique café highlighting Amazonian flavors and Brazilian ingredients. More of a laid back local spot. They are one of the only spots I’ve found in Brazil that serves real acai that’s not filled with added sugars. They also have a pretty full menu and the best crab pastels I have ever tried. This is one of the only places in Rio where you can get a caipirinha with Cachaça de jambu, which is a unique Brazilian sugarcane spirit infused with jambu, an Amazonian herb known as the "toothache plant". It is famous for producing an intense, temporary tingling, buzzing, and numbing sensation on the tongue, lips, and throat, caused by the active compound spilanthol. One of these caiprinhas had me feeling good all day, so be prepared for that. Supporting local businesses is an important part of sustainable solo woman travel in Brazil, and this spot reflects that beautifully!
Croissanteria Portuguesa
If you love pastries and strong espresso, this is a must-visit. You cannot leave Brazil without trying a Pastel de Nata pastry (introduced to Brazil during the Portuguese colonial period) and this cafe has the best one I’ve tried in Brazil! It’s perfect for a slow morning during your solo backpacking Brazil adventure.
Oi Espresso Bar
Trendy and vibrant, this espresso bar is great for an afternoon coffee break while exploring Rio solo. But be warned this espresso bar is tiny, so expect that you probably wont be able to sit & eat. This spot is better suited for a grab and go type of situation.
Nooma Café
Aesthetic, modern, and known for specialty coffee, Nooma Café is perfect for solo travelers exploring Brazil who want a not so packed relaxed place to recharge. They have a great iced coffee, which can be hard to come by in South America. Plus their outside patio is on a lovely strip of trendy cafes.
Why Café Hopping Is My Favorite Solo Woman Travel Activity
As someone passionate about solo woman travel safety in Brazil, I intentionally build my days around neighborhoods and public spaces where I feel comfortable. Café hopping allows me to:
Explore Rio de Janeiro safely as a solo woman
Connect with Brazilian culture
Practice Portuguese
Enjoy a budget-friendly activity
There’s something powerful about sitting alone in a café in Rio de Janeiro, sipping Brazilian coffee, and realizing you created this adventure for yourself.
If you’re planning solo travel to Brazil as a woman, don’t just focus on beaches and landmarks. Add café culture to your solo woman travel itinerary for Rio de Janeiro. It’s one of the most empowering and practical ways to immerse yourself in the culture of they city confidently and independently.
